What is 511?
You have probably seen signs similar to the one to the left pop up on roadsides over the past several years. In 2000, the Federal Communications Commission assigned 511 as a nationwide number for travel information. Here in Vermont, many may remember the 1-800-ICY-ROAD hotline from years past...it was one of close to 300 such numbers nationwide. The 511 system is an attempt to streamline the flow of information to travelers via a single 3-digit phone number. The Vermont Agency of Transportation, in cooperation with transportation agencies in New Hampshire and Maine, has developed a regional system to help commuters and travelers access information regarding weather-related road conditions, construction and congestion throughout Northern New England, via the web or phone – 24/7. Other states and regions across the country have developed similar systems for travelers in those areas. As of January 2007, 511 is accessible by approximately 35% of the US population, a figure that is expected to jump to nearly 70% by years end. States that are expected to implement their own 511 systems in 2007 include Massachusetts and New York.
How do I use 511?
Easy! Just pick up your phone and dial 511 from any phone for the latest information for the state you are calling from. This service is also available on most cellular carriers as well, though normal airtime and roaming charges according to your wireless service contract will apply. If you want Vermont information and are calling from outside Vermont, you can still call 1-800-ICY-ROAD (429-7623) toll-free. For New Hampshire information from out of state, call 1-866-282-7579. Each participating state also maintains their own website with travel information available from all three states. |
